Pablo León de la Barra: Hi Gerardo. How are you? I would like to ask you some questions about your work and about Preteen Gallery (http://preteengallery.net). Let’s start from the beginning. How old are you?
Gerardo Contreras: I’m 27. I was born in December 1983.

PLB: What’s your background? Did you study Architecture?
GC: Yes. I studied Architecture

PLB: How did you get into the art world? Do you consider yourself an artist?
GC: While I was studying Architecture, I had all these ideas that finally took the form of exhibitions. I had an empty space in my apartment and I decided to start making shows in November 2008. I made the website shortly after the first opening and I really don’t know how to measure it but a lot of people started visiting the website. I don’t consider myself an artist. I like the idea of being a gallerist better.

PLB: When and how did you start Preteen? How would you define it? How did the idea of opening a gallery in Hermosillo came to mind?
GC: Preteen started in November 2008 as an experimental curatorial Project and a space for new artistic expressions. I had an empty space in my apartment in Hermosillo, painted it all white, designed de lighting, etc. The idea of opening a gallery came out of an urge to make exhibitions. I always think of future exhibitions. All the time, the title, the curatorial text, display, installation, etc.

PLB: Did you grow up there (in Hermosillo)? How’s the scene there? What influenced you at the time?
GC: I grew up in Ciudad Obregón and moved to Hermosillo to study Architecture when I was 20. I don’t know the local scene very well. I was influenced by the internet and projects like tours, Javier Peres’ Peres Projects, Maurizio Cattelan’s The Wrong Gallery, Terence Koh’s ASS, etc.

PLB: How many exhibitions did you make there? Do you curate them all?
GC: I curated 25 exhibitions at Preteen in a period of two years, some in collaboration with Oscar Benassini.

PLB: How is Preteen’s financed?
GC: It’s financed from my pocket.

PLB: Do you see Preteen as something beyond the commercial gallery and artist run spaces?
GC: Not beyond but I think very different from other projects.

PLB: I’m interested also in the low budget exhibition techniques you use. Computer prints, photocopies, videos, websites. There’s almost no shipping of objects involved and almost no framing. Can you tell me about it?
GC: Everything in Preteen has been done with very little money. The most expensive exhibitions had been the ones that implied shipping of pieces. Almost all exhibitions where generated from digital files artists sent to us via internet. In some cases, the show would fit in a letter sized envelope, so shipping costs in those cases were low.

PLB: You’ve shown almost no Mexican artists! Why?
GC: Because all artists who write us to work with us are in the United States or in Europe. For some reason we’re better liked and understood outside of Mexico.

PLB: What do you think was the role of Preteen in Hermosillo? Do you think Preteen generated a local scene?
GC: Only close friends attended Preteen’s openings and we threw really awesome parties. I think Preteen didn’t affect the local scene nor created a new one.

PLB: How do you see Preteen now that it’s moved to Mexico City?
GC: The gallery is in a new phase now. Maybe not so experimental and it could be said, more serious. We want to start selling.

PLB: What was the size of the space in Hermosillo? And now in Mexico City?
GC: In Hermosillo 19 m2 and in Mexico City’s 23 m2

PLB: Where do the exhibitions titles come from? Who writes the exhibition’s texts and press releases?
GC: The exhibition’s titles and the curatorial texts are ideas that come to mind when I think of a show. They don’t necessarily describe the content of the show but they do express states of mind, visions, fantasies, drug trips, etc.

PLB: The first exhibition at Preteen was titled TRES PUTOS (THREE FAGS). There are no images of it in the website. Can you tell me about it?
GC: TRES PUTOS was Preteen’s inaugural show, when the lighting was not complete and the space was not completely painted. I don’t like the pictures so I didn’t put them on the website.

PLB: From all exhibitions you have made at Preteen, which ones are your favourites?
GC: Mi favorite is SPRING RAPE.

PLB: What about the artists you work with, where do you meet them? In the internet?
GC: Yes. I’ve met them all online through email or Facebook.

PLB: Tell me more about the artists and the exhibitions that had taken place at Preteen.
GC: In Preteen’s Hermosillo phase I worked with more tan 20 artists from different nationalities. Some because they wrote to us with some proposal, some because Oscar and I would stumble upon them online. They all gladly accepted to collaborate with us. One show that has been practically ignored by everyone and that I think was very important was the retrospective we did of Die Tödliche Doris, the punk Berlin collective from the 80s, it was the first time their work was ever exhibited in Latin America.

PLB: What is it that interests you about the artists you work with?
GC: My approach to art comes out of pure intuition and taste. All the artists I’ve worked with do very different things, in very different contexts, different reasons, etc. I think what most attracted me to their work was the feeling that the work was generated under the effect of some drug, that the work is for me authentically contemporary, insane, queer, trippy, funny, delusional, wrong, weird, fucked-up. I’m interested in punk, post-pop and post-gay aesthetics, net art, etc.

PLB: What’s your relation to mass media, pop culture, teenage culture and the culture of celebrity worship? For instance, your obsession with Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Farrah Fawcett?
GC: I have an obsession for Mariah Carey I just can’t explain it. I think it comes from smoking so much weed.

PLB: What do you think are the thematic lines that Could define Preteen?
GC: Mariah Carey, crack, the queer, the insane, anal sex, etc.

PLB: Sex, AIDS, homosexuality are themes that very present in the discourse of Preteen’s exhibitions. Few galleries or institutions in Mexico touch these topics. Do you think they’re still taboo? Do you think giving them a space for exposure is a political act? Specially outsider México City, with the interior of the country being much more conservative than the capital, also in the whole country which has been ruled for the last 10 years by the conservative, catholic and homophobic far-right.
GC: I don’t think if any of these themes are taboo or not. All these ideas come to my mind and I just make them happen. Shows, writings, tweets, tumblrs, etc. Making these kind of exhibitions constitutes a political act but only because that is inevitable, not because it is my intention or because that is in my mind when I’m making the shows.

PLB: On the other hand, there are no references in the work that you exhibit to the drug and violence reality of northern Mexico. Why?
GC: Preteen doesn’t relate to northern Mexico’s reality or the country’s reality because everything comes from ideas that come to my mind. Also, the art that has been exhibited has been always made in other contexts.

PLB: Tell me about the work you have done as an artists. About your exhibition THE DRAWINGS OF OTHER MEN, about your recent exhibition as an artist in La Loseta in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I’m also interested in your Adriano Pedrosa Project (http://adrianopedrosafanclub.tumblr.com/). What attracts you about him? Are you seduced by power in the art world?
GC: I have my own work because I have all kinds of ideas and sometimes they take the form of artworks. THE DRAWINGS OF OTHER MEN was an experiment. I wanted to know how it felt to work on a show that featured my own work in comparison with curating other artists’ work. I prefer the later. Radamés “Juni” Figueroa invited me to show some pieces at his space in Puerto Rico. Mi exhibition was entitled TOTAL RAPE and it’s meditation on marihuana and Mariah Carey. The Adriano Pedrosa Fan Club is a tumblr-piece. I made it because I think Pedrosa is super handsome and very, very sexy and I want him to know I want him so much.

PLB: Where does the name Preteen come from?
GC: When I was a teenager I used to watch a lot, -and I really mean a lot- of porn. And that was in the 90’s when there were no restrictions on the content of web pages as there is now. So, I was 15 and I would watch porn of kids my age or even younger. The word “Preteen” stayed in my mind forever. The same with the word “gallery.” One day I was just sitting doing drugs and thinking about a name for the gallery and suddenly I thought “OK, now I know: PRETEEN GALLERY.” I was also looking for a catchy name.

PLB: What is RIPFF? Who are the members? What is its curatorial proposal? Why Farrah Fawcett?
GC: REST IN PEACE FARRAH FAWCETT was a curatorial duo whose members were Oscar Benassini and myself. The idea was to make people aware that there were people curating, thinking of the shows but without saying names because at that time I thought it was a little pretentious to say “curated by Gerardo Contreras.” It seemed risky to me to call myself a curator. We called it Farrah Fawcett because just at that moment when I was thinking about the name for the curatorial team I googled about Farrah Fawcett’s death and in many sites the title was ‘REST IN PEACE FARRAH FAWCETT’ and I really liked it. It’s one of those moments.

PLB: What are your plans and future fantasies? How do you see Preteen in the future?
GC: What’s coming this year is very exciting to me. We just did an exhibition with Petra Cortight, and we’re going to work Miltos Manetas, Angelo Plessas, Dean Sameshima and Assume Vivid Astro Focus. For 2012 we want to do a guest curator’s program. My current fantasy is the PRETEEN ANAL FAIR, a very lo-fi, queer and insane contemporary art fair in Mexico City.

No me considero artista.

PLB: Cuando empezaste Preteen?

PLB: Cuantas exposiciones has hecho ahí?

GC: No.

Shows, escritos, tweets, tumblrs, etc.

THE DRAWINGS OF OTHER MEN fue un experimento.
