The 2nd Athens Biennale 2009 HEAVEN is conceived as a multifaceted contemporary art festival that extends along the coastline of Athens, in the central areas of Palaio Faliro and Kallithea. XYZ, the founders and artistic directors of the Athens Biennale have invited a select group of curators to contemplate Heaven, in a time that arguably is one of disappointment and conflict. The six exhibitions of the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009, designed by architect Andreas Angelidakis, take the form of autonomous approaches to this broad subject, that nevertheless communicate creatively and claim a degree of narrative cohesion. These six exhibitions are complemented by a series of performative events lasting all through the summer.

"Live"
curated by Dimitris Papaioannou & Ζafos Xagoraris
Temporary installations form successive theatrical scenes, screens and floating stages, while the spectators and the spectacle interchange, as residents and users of the aquatic limit are invited to attend actively in the configuration of communal spaces. New uses of the spaces are triggered, under the surface of the sea, in the street or in the roofs of neighboring buildings, without impeding the ones already existing.
Artists: An Architektur, Νikos Arvanitis, Barking Dogs, Broadcast Group, Eloisa Cartonera, Centre for Research Architecture - Goldsmiths College, Cesare Pietroiusti & Matteo Fraterno, Collective Actions, Coti K. , The Errands , Filopappou Group, Tadeusz Kantor, Reijo Kela, Antti Laitinen, Tea Mäkipää, Jennifer Nelson & Dimitris Kotsaras, NSK, Lucy & Jorge Orta, Anna Ostoya, Palaio Faliro artists group, Superflex, Water Girls, Water Boys [Jili Traganou & Eleni Tzirtzilaki], Krzysztof Wodiczko, Ykon.

"World Question Center"
curated by Chus Martinez
The departure point of Chus Martínez's exhibition is to expand the limits of know through the development of working hypothesis; it will be entirely dedicated to the radical importance of questions. Heaven could be understood as a space for mere speculation. It seems easy but is not. Nothing is more difficult nowadays than to escape the logic of the 'what for'. The logic of the show is simple: every one of the artists is requested to submit a work, a question, a thinking hypothesis in their own terms. Nonetheless, the show should be here conceived not from the artistic response to a topic, but as an assemblage of very different thinking logics. Logics that hopefully will help the viewer, but also the artists to develop further different interpretations of the near future.
Artists: Alexis Akrithakis, Michel Auder, Thomas Bayrle, Erick Beltran, The Callas, Jef Cornelis, Roberto Cuoghi, Marianna Castillo Deball, Luke Fowler, Dora García, Andrea Geyer, André Guedes, Dorothy Iannone, Ferdinand Kriwet, Maria Loboda, Babette Mangolte, Rosalind Nashashibi & Lucy Skaer, Maria Pask, Lisi Raskin, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Lasse Schmidt Hansen, Sue Tompkins, Kostis Velonis.

"For the Straight Way is Lost"

curated by Diana Baldon
Diana Baldon's exhibition is arranged around a framing device represented by the eight circles of the anti-chamber of heaven: the purgatory. According to Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, a mountain brings souls to heaven through a series of tests visualised in "gironi". Beyond being a geographically situated place, purgatory is a human condition, a process of purification or temporary punishment where souls of those who die depend on self-achievement, compassion and imagination to be prepared for redemption. However, her concept distances itself from Dante's epic poem simply using its structure as a tool to organise works inside what we could imagine is a horizontal representation Mount Purgatory, that is a vessel, or Nautilus shell that gets smaller and smaller as it grows to end up in a rabbit hole, which could stand for the Pearly Gate.
Artists: Mark Aerial Waller, Athanasios Argianas, Athanasios Argianas & Nick Laessing, Adam Chodzko, The Errorists, Anja Kirschner, Domenico Mangano, Tom McCarthy, Christoph Schlingensief, Carolee Schneemann, Michael Stevenson.

"Splendid Isolation, Athens"

curated by Cay Sophie Rabinowitz
As one of the curators invited to contemplate the subject of Heaven, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz oriented her approach to this immeasurably broad topic by naming her exhibition Splendid Isolation, Athens. Guided by an immersive approach rather than a topical or thematic one, her selection and presentation let the viewer ponder if and how creative activity, social practices, and aesthetic experience may be directed. Splendid Isolation, Athens includes a number of art works that employ some formal or structural principle, whether it be as rigid as scaffolding, as symbolic as a monetary exchange, as modular as blocks, or as flexible as narrative. For many artists in the show, some existent form—be it physical or immaterial, biographical or contrived, religious or scientific—offers a means by which to re-consider, re-form, re-imagine or even re-structure a momentary or lifelong place of inspiration.
Artists: Lara Almarcegui, Anastasia Douka, Michael Gibson, Benita-Immanuel Grosser, Hsuan Hsuan Wu, Em Kei, Kalup Linzy, Miltos Manetas, Ryan McNamara, Malcolm McLaren, Martin Oppel, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Mai-Thu Perret, Angelo Plessas, Ry Rocklen, Willem de Rooij, Ettore Sottsass, Adrian Williams.

"Hotel Paradies"

curated by Nadja Argyropoulou
Between the only common certainty that is death and the endless possibility that is after-life, there is a kind of terrible tension, the very spark of everything that is: Desire. In this light, Paradise can be understood as "Desire unleashed". Not as an idyllic place (island, garden, Arcadia) of bliss and innocence regained. As a monument constantly rising towards its ruination, as something equally rooted in and free of the land, as a paradox that punctures time, the Hotel Paradies is such a lair of Desire. The name derives from a rather common language corruption; one which serves as a starting and end point for the conceptual references of this exhibition. Paradies: This which lies next to and beyond death. It is therefore a name that invokes an era when no names existed.
Artists: Kenneth Anger, Apophenia, Daniel Arsham, Zoe Beloff, Manfredi Beninati, Paul Chan, Savvas Christodoulides, EVP, Zoi Gaitanidou, Yiannoulis Halepas, Infinite Library (Harris Epaminonda & Daniel Gustav Cramer), International Necronautical Society (INS), Vassilis Karouk, Dionisis Kavallieratos, Joachim Koester, Sandra Kranich, Robert Kuśmirowski, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Paul Noble, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis, Saprophytes, Markus Selg, Robert Smithson, Christiana Soulou, Jan Švankmajer, Alexandros Tzannis, Unknown Artist, Marie Wilson Valaoritis & Nanos Valaoritis

"How many Angels can Dance on the Head of a Pin?

curated by Christopher Marinos
How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? is one of the six curatorial projects of the 2nd Athens Biennial. The exhibition traces the spiritual meaning of paradise more as a 'possibility' or 'promise' within the daily spectre of life and less as a redemptive phenomenon located in an afterlife. Divided into three sections, the exhibition features works which together explore the idea of a domesticated heaven: The first section is equivalent to reality enforcement and the way one remembers Paradise through a glass darkly; in stark contrast, the second section corresponds to psychedelic journeys, decadent dreams, theatrical gestures and utopian constellations; while the last one is symbolized by an overwhelming feeling of loneliness, a sense of foreboding melancholy as well as an irrepressible impulse of repetition.
Artists: Bruce Baillie, Mieke Bal, Lydia Dampassina, Dora Economou, Angus Fairhurst, Harun Farocki, Leon Frantzis, Lothar Hempel, Andreas Kassapis, Panayiotis Loukas, Ursula Mayer, Kris Martin, Marc Nagtzaam, OMIO, Adrian Paci, Nina Papaconstantinou, Angelos Papadimitriou, Société Réaliste, Kostas Roussakis, Yannis Skourletis, Christian Tomaszewski, Mark Wallinger.

“Where do authors go when characters interrupt the story?” is the inscription at the heart of the Clifford Irving Show taking place at Cine 13, the renowned Paris theater in Montmartre, on the occasion of the second edition of Irving’s autobiography. The one-night-only live variety show is dedicated to the arts’ involvement in life-writing at large and will star a variety of stories, performances, characters and audiences. Conceived as a space of shaken expectations and dramatically-treated expertise, it will be an adventure for both characters and authors. Rather than focusing on a singular figure of the eponymous writer, Clifford Irving Show will illuminate possibilities of collective subjectivity lying in The Autobiography of Any One Being Including Every One Before, a new story that has recently written itself.

Since the publication of his Autobiography of Howard Hughes in 1972, Clifford Irving’s life has been nothing but adventure. That book was an unauthorized biography of the eccentric aviator and film director Howard Hughes (1905-1976), an American tycoon billionaire who died in 1976, after living in reclusion the last years of his life. The autobiography, a creative concoction of Clifford Irving and his conspirator Dick Suskind, caused a scandal when the reclusive Hughes declared it a hoax, leading to the imprisonment of the authors. The magic of ghost-writing was interrupted, but nevertheless kept life-writing intact: Clifford Irving has written several books since and was played by Richard Gere in The Hoax (2007). According to Gere, what Clifford Irving did to Hughes was an artwork.

“Not every part of an adventure is fun, but on the whole it’s a lot more life-affirming than sitting on your ass at a desk stringing words together,” admitted Clifford Irving in a recent interview to Paul Maliszewski. When asked about motives to “fake” the autobiography of Hughes the writer responded somewhat agnostically, “You may look for motive in an act, but only after the act has been committed. Any further answer concerning motive would be faked by me.”

Fakes. Impostures. Hoaxes. Illusion of expertise. Magic. Value of art. Doubles. Re-makings. Multiple narratives. These are also the subjects of Orson Welles‘ 1974 film F for Fake, partially based on the footage by French documentary filmmaker Francois Reichenbach, which is accompanied by Michel Legrand’s tune. Whether Clifford Irving plays himself in the film or not remains a question. Last year it was partially answered during in the launch of Phantom Rosebuds, a new Clifford Irving autobiography, published by Dexter Sinister. Titled Clifford Irving Show the event took place on the roof of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in L.A and New Langtons art space in San Francisco.

When suddenly and unexpectedly clouds of hellium baloons, carried by two San Francisco architects, arrived on stage at New Langtons—leaving the audience, MC Gabriel Lester and magician Michael Stroud dazzled—the story got interrupted, but certainly precluded the upcoming one in Paris. Starring the same MC, yet drawing on the stage acts of new guests, it will inevitably entertain further questions like “Does it necessarily mean that when characters interrupt the story they start playing themselves? ” Or “Do we always arrive at Clifford Irving Show when we leap beyond the dichotomy of fake
and authentic?”

Like the inscription of the new autobiography (published by Dexter Sinister again) coming true: “Dedicated to everyone from whom I have learned.”

An Internet Pavilion for the 53rd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2009.

The largest pavilion ever!

At the 53rd Venice Biennial, a completely new pavilion will be presented - the Internet Pavilion. With the theme for this year's biennial, "Making Worlds", it is only logical that the Internet is represented, for the first time, by a pavilion of its own. The Internet is a new part of our world that has never been represented in Venice. It is a different territory from the existing pavilions. The Internet is not defined by physical or geographical borders, nationalities, or a specific language. The Net is still new and developed with such speed that its legislation, as well as its impact on our lives, is under constant redefinition. The Internet is transforming our lives and senses; it is transforming the way we behave, communicate, share information and develop ideas. As this is what we often say art does, it is of special interest to present the Internet Pavilion at the Venice Biennial.

The Pavilion is composed by two websites:
- http://www.PadiglioneInternet.com, hosts a collaboration by Miltos Manetas and Rafael Rozendaal. It will open on June 03 and similar to the physical buildings of the Biennial, it will close down in November.
- http://www.Biennale.net, holds the discussion and the history of the project and at the same time, it is the "entrance" for a number of collateral exhibitions and projects.

Among them:
- "New Wave", an online show with a physical component featuring Petra Cortright (US), Martijn Hendriks (NE), Harm Van den Dorpel (HO), Sinem Erkas (UK), Elna Frederick (US), Parker Ito (US), Oliver Laric (AU), Guthrie Lonergan (US) and Pascual Sisto (ES/US).
- The WikepediaArt Embassy hosted by Scott Kildall(US) and Nathaniel Stern (US)
- The latest work by Aleksandra Domanovic (SE)
- An online show with Chinese Internet artists. (it will open later this Summer)
- The second updated edition of "Random Rules": A Chanel of Artists' selections from YouTube curated by Marina Fokidis (it will open later this fall)
- "PAGES" by Christian Wassmann. A piece of architecture that turns Internet into space and space into Internet. Mr. Wassmann will build "PAGES"- which he brought it with him in pieces from NY-at S.A.L.E on June 03
A video that explains Mr. Wassmann mental process can be found at http://padiglioneinternet.com/architecture
- "Network of Love", a performance by AIDS-3D (US) on June 03 at 12 AM at S.A.L.E
-The "Book of Si" by Colin Payne and Miltos Manetas. A modern "Book of Sand" in the tradition of Borges where a webpage can be found only once and never again.

During the preparation of the Internet Pavilion a number of stakeholders from the various ranks of the Internet industry has been contacted, commercial as well as non-commercial. This is an investigation of the fact the digital territory is introduced at the Venice Biennial for the very first time.

These might operate independently, outside of the "official" terrain of the Venice Biennial and the Padiglione Internet, creating a contrast between cultural elite and the different creative powers of the Net. Between others we highlight here the presence of Tiscali which will offering free WiFi via the visitors of Biennale.net and the PirateBay.org and their project Embassy of Piracy, also hosted by S.A.L.E.S

The Internet Pavilion is a project initiated by the Greek born, London based artist Miltos Manetas, curated by Jan Aman and produced by Art Production Fund.

GRACIELA CARNEVALE ARCHIVE AND BIK VAN DER POL AT PUMP HOUSE GALLERY, LONDON

Artistas de Vangardia (Graciela Carnevale archive) and Bik Van der Pol
27 May 2009 - 19 July 2009

Pump House Gallery is pleased to host the first major UK presentation of the works of Grupo de Artistas de Vangardia (Argentina), and Loompanics Unlimited by Bik Van der Pol (Netherlands). Although visually very different, the ideas, approach and debates explored through their works are remarkably similar; encouraging the viewer to consider such ideas as power, economic disparity, the State and the social role of art.

Grupo de Artistas de Vangardia, formed in the 1960s, created some of the most important examples of political and investigative art in Latin America. This exhibition, co-produced with Graciela Carnevale, a member and participant in the group’s projects, brings together an archive of photographs, manifestos, reports and documentation of their activities.

An early work by the group, Experimental Art Cycle (Rosario,1968), was a series of individual exhibitions that challenged the conventional role of the gallery, placing art within a wider context. On the opening night of Carnevale’s exhibition, she locked guests in the exhibition space. They only escaped when a passing member of the public smashed the gallery’s glass window.

Later, they developed Tucumán Arde (1968), a project and exhibition exposing hardship in the Tucumán region caused by the then Argentine government’s repressive economic programme. The exhibition became the central alternative outlet of counter government information and, after being displayed for two weeks in Rosario, it was shown in Buenos Aires, where the police closed it down on the opening day. Due to government censorship many of the artists ceased practising their art for many years, some for good.

Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol) have been working together since 1995. They explore the potential of art to produce and transmit knowledge, and often reuse and reactivate the work of others to find new connections and points of interaction. They are exhibiting Loompanics Unlimited for the first time in the UK.

An American publishing and bookselling company, Loompanics Unlimited (1975-2006) specialized in unusual, unpredictable and controversial books, which, for instance, teach you how to survive without being connected to the electricity board or how to disappear and never be discovered again. Manuals that ‘your mother and the state would rather you didn’t read’.

Presenting a selection of 140 books from Loompanics Unlimited, from “Money-Making Opportunities, Underground Economy, Fake I.D.’s, Locks and Locksmithing” to “Conducting Investigations and How to Sneak into the Movies Without Paying”, Bik Van der Pol address the visitor and reader as an individual and a member of society, causing us to explore our own limitations in relation to freedom of speech, censorship and private responsibility. Evaluating the notions of ultimate democratic freedom alongside ideas of what is socially desirable; Bik Van der Pol’s presentation is for knowledge, fun, pleasure and the unlimited possibilities of the individual.

Grupo de Artistas de Vanguardia’s Tucumán Arde Archive has been exhibited at Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel 2007; Palais de Glace, Buenos Aires 2006; Witte de With, Netherlands, 2005 and Museum Ludwig, Cologne 2004. Craciela Carnevale (1942, Argentina), has exhibited at Documenta 12, Kassel, 2007; Centro Cultural de Espania, Argentina, 2003; Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Wifredo Lam, Cuba, 2001; C.C.B. Rivadavia, Argentina, 1999.

Bik Van der Pol live and work in Rotterdam. Recent exhibitions include PLUG-IN 28, Pay Attention, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2008; For Reasons Of State, ISP Whitney, New York, 2008; Moscow Biennale, Mosow, 2007; Fly Me To The Moon, New Riijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 2006
